Music Theatre (Humanities)
Students choosing the B.A. in Musical Theatre will take required courses in theatre, music, and dance. This major is comprehensive; therefore, no minor is required.
Program Learning Outcomes
The Musical Theatre student will:
- Demonstrate familiarity with commonly recognized periods and traditions in the broad sweep of theatrical history.
- Utilize technical elements necessary to mount a stage production including scenic design, lighting, costuming, makeup, stage management, and construction.
- Demonstrate effective use of the actor’s imagination and physical resources to develop a compelling character for the stage.
- Direct a series of scenes or one-act play encompassing the elements of script analysis, blocking, casting and coaching actors.
- Perform satisfactorily as an ensemble member on the theatrical stage.
- Identify and articulate the holistic (spiritual and humane) aspects of the theatrical arts in performance and/or experience.
- MUED 333 #11: Demonstrate specific knowledge of the properties of rhythm, melody, and harmony in written and aural music theory.
- MUSC 348 #8: Demonstrate rudimentary capacity to create original or derivative music and exhibit improvisational skills.
- Applied Music - #9/Ensembles - #9: Demonstrate performance in technical skills, collaborative competence, and knowledge of repertory in solo and ensemble context.
- Demonstrate dance techniques according to the expected levels of the course, applying key concepts in the areas of dance, choreography, and dance theory/criticism.
- Discuss and practice performance application of theater and dance texts (play scripts, choreography, and live performances), considering their aesthetic and social values through time and cultures.
