FREN 101 : Basic French I

Introduces approximately one-fourth of the phonetics, grammar, and vocabulary needed to adequately express the target language. Study includes a balanced focus among the four basic language skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. This course aligns with a student’s typical 1st semester of college-level French.  Offered through Chez Vous online Fall and Spring semesters.

FREN 201 : Intermediate French I : Grammar and Culture

Provides intensive work in all four language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Study includes both review and expansion of grammar and phonetics foundational to oral and written communication, along with substantial engagement with French culture, target-language materials, and scripture. This course aligns with a student’s typical 3rd semester of college-level French. Taught in French as much as possible. Offered through Chez Vous online Fall and Spring semesters.

FREN 202 : Intermediate French II : Grammar and Conversation

Emphasizes the fundamentals of French while providing intensive work in all four language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Students apply these skills through substantial engagement with French culture, target-language materials, and scripture. This course aligns with a student’s typical 4th semester of college-level French. Taught in French. Offered through Chez Vous online Fall and Spring semesters and in France every summer.

FREN 294 / 494 : Travel

Provides an opportunity to be enriched linguistically and culturally through travel and study in a French-speaking country.

FREN 301 : French Conversation and Phonetics

Continues to strengthen the student’s foundation in French grammar and syntax, while also engaging the student in extensive verbal interaction around class content consisting of French culture, history, civilization, and spiritual life. Students will make considerable progress in verbal skills, listening comprehension, vocabulary, and phonetics. Taught in French. Offered through Chez Vous in France every summer.

FREN 302 : Advanced French Conversation and Phonetics

FREN 311 : Contemporary French Society and Culture

Concentrates on the evolution of French life since World War II. Particular attention is given to social, political, and economic structures, along with trends in art, media, and daily life. Includes substantial classroom interaction with continuing development of writing skills. Taught in French. Offered through Chez Vous in France even-numbered summers.

FREN 312 : French Civilization and History

Introduces students to the historical development of French civilization (through WWII), then connects various historical threads to current institutional, political, and social aspects of modern France. FREN 321 : Spiritual Life in France Today

Provides students with an overview of spiritual belief and practice in today’s France, including its current struggles with “laïcité.” A special focus on Christianity explores current Catholic and Protestant expressions of faith, along with the significant recent developments in evangelicalism. Students will gain a greater facility for understanding the spiritual perceptions of French people. Includes substantial classroom interaction and continuing development of writing skills. Taught in French. Offered through Chez Vous in France even-numbered summers.

FREN 322 : French Christian History

Covers French Christian History from legendary stories of the Apostle Paul and St. Denis in France, through medieval church mysteries, the Reformation, and the post-WWII missionary enterprise – the sweeping arc of Christianity has exerted profound influence on French history and culture. This study gives students a deep  understanding of the rich spiritual heritage Christianity enjoys through France. Includes substantial classroom interaction with continuing development of writing skills. Taught in French. Offered through Chez Vous in France odd-numbered summers.

FREN 454 : French Studies in Normandy

Provides students intermediate to advanced studies in French culture and language at the Jacque Lefevre Institute, a Christian Liberal Arts Extension College, in Normandy, France. This course meets the Core Curriculum Global Culture and Compassion requirement. Must enroll in the 400 Level option for FREN 311 and FREN 321, or FREN 312 and FREN 322. Includes 7-week term project that includes both courses offered in the even or odd-numbered summer term.
