Religious Studies Minor
The Religious Studies minor consists of 18 hours and is designed to provide students the opportunity to pursue a wide variety of interests which fall under the Department of Theology and Global Church Ministries. * Six credits in the minor must be upper-division credits. Three of the upper-division credits be substituted with six lower division credits. This would make the minor 21 credits instead of 18 credits
For most students the requirements are 9 credit hours of Core Curriculum Bible and Theology courses (one must be THEO 320, Pentecost), and 9 more credit hours of departmental classes. Almost any courses from the department can be used, with just a few exceptions (see below).
Students who are interested in an area of study within Theology and Global Church Ministries but do not want to take 18 credits in those areas, may focus the remaining 9 hours in a single area such as intercultural Studies, Youth Ministry, or Philosophy. Or the 9 hours may be chosen from three different areas, such as Archaeology, Philosophy, and Church History.
Transfer students may use courses from other institutions that fall under the Theology and Global Church Ministries Department but do not fulfill specific requirements at Evangel. This is a common situation for people who have taken some courses at another Christian college, as well as some community colleges. Transfer students can often earn a minor based on the reduced Bible and Theology Core Curriculum requirements plus their transfer courses, if they add up to 18 credit hours.
There are a few exclusions: Core Curriculum courses beyond the 9 required Core credit hours, as well as Elementary Hebrew and Greek, cannot be used for the minor. In addition, students who have Biblical Studies or Church Leadership majors cannot use any Core Curriculum credits toward the minor. That said, the required Philosophy course(s) can be applied to the minor.
