English Major, TESOL Track

The Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) track equips students to teach English and serve multilingual individuals and families both in the United States and around the world. 

Our alumni have taught in nations such as Japan, South Korea, and Egypt.  Education majors teaching in the U.S. who also majored or minored in TESOL may be certified to teach English Language Learners (ELLs). For example, an Elementary Education major with a TESOL minor may apply for certification in Elementary Education as well as TESOL. 

As part of their program in Evangel’s Springfield community, students collaborate with the English Language Institute and other local organizations to work with those who are adjusting to American culture while learning English. In fact, this track is one of the most community-orientated majors in the Humanities department.

Each TESOL student fulfills a practicum working with multilingual students. A practicum may consist, for example, in preparing curriculum to teach at a school in South Korea over the summer. Students also have the option of completing a community internship to prepare for a vocation working with international organizations that assist ELLs. 

In addition, the TESOL track complements other disciplines such as intercultural studies, humanitarian programs, foreign languages, education, business, etc.
 

English TESOL Track Program Learning Outcomes:

1. Analyze a text competently for its structural elements and interpretive potentials—particularly in the categories of diction, imagery, figurative language, irony, setting, character, plot, narrative point of view, and genre characteristics.
2. Demonstrate high proficiency in using the protocols of standard written North American English. 
3. Use pertinent research information effectively as necessary or advantageous within written or spoken discourse.
4. Demonstrate advanced skills of integrative and independent thinking in written and verbal expression.
5. Demonstrate the ability to hold contradictory ideas in mind during discussion by calmly considering others’ perspectives, asking productive questions, articulating respectful responses, and finding ways to synthesize others’ ideas with one’s own.
6. Discuss various ways in which the Christian faith is, has been, or can be in meaningful dialogue with literary texts of any kind.
7. Know, understand, and use the major theories and research related to the structure and acquisition of language to help ELLs develop language and literacy and achieve in the content areas.
8. Know, understand, and use major concepts, principles, theories and research related to the nature and role of culture and cultural groups to construct supportive learning environments for ELLS.
9. Know, understand, and use evidence-based practices related to planning, implementing, and managing standards-based ESL and content instruction.
10. Demonstrate understanding of issues and concepts of assessment and use standard-based procedures with ELLS.
11. Exhibit appropriate professional dispositions.
