Music Theatre (Music)

Students choosing the B.A. in Musical Theatre will take required courses in theatre, music, and dance. This major is comprehensive; therefore, no minor is required.

Program Learning Outcomes

The Musical Theatre student will:

  1. Demonstrate familiarity with commonly recognized periods and traditions in the broad sweep of theatrical history.
  2. Utilize technical elements necessary to mount a stage production including scenic design, lighting, costuming, makeup, stage management, and construction.
  3. Demonstrate effective use of the actor’s imagination and physical resources to develop a compelling character for the stage.
  4. Direct a series of scenes or one-act play encompassing the elements of script analysis, blocking, casting and coaching actors.
  5. Perform satisfactorily as an ensemble member on the theatrical stage.
  6. Identify and articulate the holistic (spiritual and humane) aspects of the theatrical arts in performance and/or experience.
  7. MUED 333 #11: Demonstrate specific knowledge of the properties of rhythm, melody, and harmony in written and aural music theory.
  8. MUSC 348 #8: Demonstrate rudimentary capacity to create original or derivative music and exhibit improvisational skills.
  9. Applied Music - #9/Ensembles - #9: Demonstrate performance in technical skills, collaborative competence, and knowledge of repertory in solo and ensemble context.
  10. Demonstrate dance techniques according to the expected levels of the course, applying key concepts in the areas of dance, choreography, and dance theory/criticism.
  11. Discuss and practice performance application of theater and dance texts (play scripts, choreography, and live performances), considering their aesthetic and social values through time and cultures.
