Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Language Competence: Achieve at least the Advanced level of French competence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing comprehension as defined by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. (ACTFL guidelines.)
  2. Cultural Competence: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of cultural ideas, practices, and products from the diverse French-speaking world, placing them in their historical, political, and social contexts, and interpreting the unique perspectives on human experience that they reveal.
  3. Sociolinguistics:  Demonstrate an understanding of major dialectal differences in the Francophone world by reference to fundamentals of phonetics, semantics, morphology, syntax, and sociolinguistic aspects.
  4. Cross-cultural Sensitivity: Demonstrate the ability to function well in French-speaking cultures while exhibiting cross-cultural humility in relation to those cultures.
  5. Integration of Faith and French: Use French effectively to integrate personal faith and cross-cultural interactions with French speakers.
  6. Teaching Methods: Demonstrate in-depth understanding of foreign-language teaching methods, best practices, standards (national, state, and institutional), and pedagogical theories by applying them to classroom situations to improve students’ French-language proficiency and French-cultural competence.
